Consideration of appeal on prohibition of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation

29September 2016

On September 29, 2016 at 11:00 in Moscow the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation will consider the appeal of the lawyers of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People on decision of the so-called Supreme Court in the occupied Crimea to recognize Mejlis as an extremist organization and ban its activity.

As far back as on April 26, 2016 the Supreme Court of the occupied Crimea ruled to recognize the Mejlis as an extremist organization and as a result banned its activity, ignoring the fact that it is the only highest executive-representative body elected by the Crimean Tatar People. Hence, the ban entails a violation of the Crimean Tatar people’s rights. Lawyers of the Mejlis have filed an appeal against this decision to the Supreme Court of Russian Federation.

The case is supported by the lawyers of the Ukrainian lawyers from Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union/UHHRU in cooperation with the Russian lawyers from Moscow-based “Memorial” Human Rights Center, which is about to represent the interests of the Mejlis in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation on the above mentioned date.

International media is highly welcomed to highlight the course of the trial. For any questions, please contact us.
