Second forum of human rights organizations: monitoring human rights in Ukraine

The Forum “Monitoring Human Rights in Ukraine” will take place at Rus’  Hotel, Kyiv, April 11-12, 2005. The Forum is being organized by the Ukrainian  Helsinki Human Rights Union with the support from International Renaissance  Foundation and the Embassy of the USA in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union (UHHRU) is the All-Ukrainian Association of human rights organizations established for the purpose of implementation of the humanitarian articles of the 1975 Final Act of the Helsinki Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe, alongside other international legal instruments aiming at human rights protection.

Colleagues have previously known the Association as the Council of Ukrainian human rights organizations (RUPOR). In 2004 this network was transformed into the legal entity UHHRU.  Last year, more than 140 people from 10 countries, representing 76 Ukrainian human rights NGOs attended the RUPOR’s First Forum of the human rights organizations which has become the premier NGO event in Ukraine in 2004.

This year’s Forum, “Monitoring Human Rights in Ukraine”, is committed to continue the creation of a forum for NGOs’ information sharing and dissemination. Its main subject would be presentation of the Report on human rights in Ukraine in 2004, which was prepared by the network of the Ukrainian human rights NGOs. The Report is to be presented in Ukrainian and English.

The Forum will include morning and afternoon panels (presentation and discussion of the report; presentation of the documentary film on the report), as well as workshops (on freedom from torture; freedom of thought, conscience and religion; freedom of expression; freedom of assembly and association etc.) Speakers will include eminent personalities, high-level government officials and representatives of civil society from many countries. The Ukrainian version of the US State Department’s annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices (Ukraine) would also be represented.

Forum’s working languages: Ukrainian and English.
